2025 Revitalization Grant Award Recipient

$345K grant to renovate local business awarded to Gold Beach Main Street

Gold Beach Main Street (GBMS) is pleased to announce the receipt of an Oregon Main Street (OMS) Revitalization Grant to fund muchneeded renovations and repairs to Barnacle Bistro Restaurant, a key community gathering place and eatery for both residents and thousands of visitors each year to the City of Gold Beach.

The total award of $345,564 will be matched with $128,336 combined from Barnacle Bistro owner Evan Boley, a $10,000 Revitalization Grant from the City of Gold Beach, and in-kind labor provided by community members, GBMS grant administration, and Darryl Cross, Project Management. The grant funding includes purchase of the building to ensure the long-term upkeep of the business property.

This grant enables us to make the changes to how the business operates that will allow it to keep pace with an ever-changing economic climate
— Evan Boley, Barnacle Bistro Owner

Renovations to the building include a new roof, upgrades to the kitchen flooring and drainage systems, new tile and fixtures in the bathrooms, structural repairs, new fascia boards, replacement of deteriorated siding, reconstructed windows, a new covered entry vestibule, and new paint. The restoration of the 52-year-old building will maintain the iconic yurt architecture from 1973, when the original Bunyan Burgers restaurant was constructed, while providing amenities that will streamline operations to serve more customers.

Work will begin after the grant agreement is executed and funds are available, slated for July 2025, with construction work to commence after the tourism season slows in the fall.

Improving our main street and making out town inviting along Highway 101 is our goal. Thanks to Oregon Main Street for making this project possible.
— Laurie Van Zante, GBMS Board President

Work on the grant process began in earnest in January, with a committee of 9 community business owners and stakeholders to define the goals and decision-making process for choosing which projects out of 15 applications to promote to the grant application process.

The sheer number of applications from our community indicates how great the need is in our town to help out our small businesses. Those applicants not chosen this time will be contacted for reconsideration in the next funding cycle slated for 2027.
— Linda Pinkham, GBMS Grant Writer

Oregon Main Street (OMS) received 76 applications from across the state, but were only able to fund 35. Gold Beach Main Street has successfully completed two previous Oregon Main Street grants that provided renovations to Ace Hardware, Sunset Station and First Chapter Coffee House. The Oregon Main Street Revitalization Grant Program offers up to $400,000 in funds for projects in designated downtown areas in Oregon communities participating in the Oregon Main Street Network.

Gold Beach Main Street is an affiliate member of Main Street America and Oregon Main Street. Main Street organizations are part of a collaborative movement with partners and grassroots leaders who advance shared prosperity, create resilient economies, and improve quality of life through place-based economic development and community preservation in downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts across the country.
