Utility Feasibility Study

Undergrounding Utilities

A street scene with vehicles on the road, a motel sign that reads "Motel 101," a road work sign, and overhead power lines. There is also a handwritten sign with partial text about sanitizing and reopening.

For Safety, Aesthetics & Accessibility

We raised $105,000 for a feasibility study to underground utilities. Undergrounding utilities has many benefits, including:

  • Safety: Less likely to be damaged by automobiles and natural hazards, such as fallen trees or high winds.

  • Reliability: Less vulnerable to damage than overhead systems, which reduces the frequency of outages, especially from storms.

  • Reduced fire risk: Chances of ignition are reduced to zero.

  • Aesthetic benefits: Improves the look of the area and provides better visibility for businesses.

  • Accessibility: Sidewalks are unobstructed.

  • Reduced maintenance costs.

More than 130 members of the community turned out to learn about utility undergrounding and weigh in with their thoughts on the project. Mayor Tami Kaufman, architect Spirit Meller and Consor engineer Dan Ebbighausen are pictured going over a map of Gold Beach’s city streets.

The cost to underground the utilities along main street in Gold Beach is approximately $16 million. You can read the final 47-page Feasibility Study at the link below.
